Beauty, Make Up

Hi Lovelies

Happy Friday! Another Friday here already and a mixed week for me. Last Friday night, I was in London when the awfulness happened in Paris and as I sat in my hotel room, you could feel the whole capital was just in sadness for the events that unfolded in Paris that night. I know it struck Becky and Holly, that my husband and I had gone off to London for a night at the theatre and how for all those families affected, they never knew what the outcome was going to be that night. Add to that, one hell of a cold (caught from my husband who only had a sniffle, but I end up with a really bad head cold) and it’s been a bit of a week. Anyone else on the cold and flu tablets?? So we need a bit of beauty to cheer us up!!!

Let’s get started with a mascara that has been out for a while I know, but one which I have only really used lately. Lancome patented this mascara for its “swan neck” which I must admit I was a bit daunted by at first and almost scared to use? However, on using it you do find that it helps give great lift as you twirl away. I love the brush as sometimes I find them too long or the bristles way too thick for my lashes, but this elastomer one distributes the mascara evenly over the eyelashes and its great for my teeny weeny little lower lashes.

The other nice thing is that is has a nourishing rose oil in it which also helps to smooth as you apply. You do actually get used to the swan neck and probably find you are not doing as many weird head movements to apply it. I have to say when I first used it I did love the lifting and lengthening aspect of it. It’s not for you if you want masses of volume, but I love it as a great mascara (easily removed at the end of the day) for the day. It’s not cheap though … £24.50 was the cheapest that I could find it online for.

Now I am someone that has only over the last year got into oils. I used to think that they would clog my pores and be greasy, which is a feeling I hate, but I am becoming a fan of them. L’Oreal’s version for the likes of me and my lovely friends of a certain age (whatever that might be) – I tend to say it’s more how your skin feels than the age that you are, is a gorgeous blend of 8 essential oils, lavender, marjoram, rosemary, geranium and rose being amongst them. So in there, ideal for me too with sensitive skin are some oils that help have antibacterial properties so help to calm redness and are good for sensitive skin. It does have a slight perfume, which I would say is on the light citrussy side but it doesn’t linger long.

So about 3 drops of this at nighttime (you can use it in the morning as well), rubbed gently in my fingers and then massaged in circular motion on my face and neck and I do decollete as well really does help to leave my skin glow, be much smoother and more nourished. I prefer to do this oil treatment first and leave that for a few seconds and then add my night moisturiser separately but I know some people pop it into their moisturiser and do them both in one step. Having been someone who was really fearful of the whole oil thing, I have been converted to realising that it is just what my skin actually needs, particularly as we get a little bit (only a little bit hehe) older …. as it starts to thin and can look slightly dull too … this is the answer! I found it at all sorts of prices too from £6.90 up to £13.33 online , but either way, it’s a great price for a lovely oil, which using only a few drops a day is going to last you simply ages!! I am now an oil convert !!!!

Wanting a fresh, natural, long wearing, buildable blusher that looks great on fair skin? Then this one is it. This has become my Holy Grail blusher for the past month or so and I purchased it by chance really as I probably wouldn’t have done as it looked like it was going to be glittery/shimmer when in fact it isn’t. It’s a really flattering dusky pink with no fragrance, which is what I like, comes in a lovely silver container and has a mirror as well.

I am not really a fan of the brush although on the move, without your normal blusher brush you could possibly get away with it, but you need to go lightly with the brush supplied as it does tend to make you look clownlike if you are a bit heavy handed with it, so as always go gently with blusher and build it up in layers if you need to. I think it’s good value compared to some higher end blushes, say like Nars, and this would last you ages and ages. Cheapest price I found it at was £19.60 but truly a lovely blush.

That’s it for this week’s blog… I am going to leave you with one of my favourite shoes …. so cute xx

oh … they are from Next …

Lots of love and have a great week and hope you don’t get a cold like me xx

Beauty, Hair, Make Up, Nails

Welcome back Lovelies

This Friday has found me back in the UK and positively shivering when I returned … what has happened to our temperatures? We have truly gone into Autumn and I need to be doing some serious thinking about planning an Autumn wardrobe as last year I didn’t buy very much and have very few sweaters to see me through. My problem is I am a “throw on a dress and some heels” kinda gal! Going to be shivering a lot then! Does everyone feel like that when they get back from somewhere fairly warm … put the heating on and how are we going to survive haha? I haven’t actually put the heating on yet, but I have an Aga in my kitchen which I have kept going on low all year round as I can’t bear to be cold. I had a great time in France at the World Rowing Champs where I am pleased to say GB came first in the medals section, so it was exciting times and great to catch up with so many people. Here’s a little shot of the beautiful Lake Aiguebelette on the day my nephew was rowing (for Australia actually).

Now onto some beauty and how would you feel about using a nail polish that is probably the most moisturising I have ever used and doesn’t leave yellow staining on your nail? As you readers will know, I love nail polish and use many brands but trying this latest one by Eve Snow has been different. Right from the glossy way that the polish looked and the richness of colour, I knew that this was different from a lot of brands and the reason for this is that it contains Vitamin E, Argan Oil and Ginkgo Biloba whose properties help to nourish the nail and it is also a brand with fewer toxins in too.

eve snow varnish

I tried this out on my nails a few days before a trip to France where I wanted a nice coral colour to show off my toes and the shade I have is Sunrise Glow. It goes on beautifully and you could almost get away with one coat, but because I was going away for a while I applied two. Ten days on, it still looks glossy and rich in colour, is only very slightly chipped and my nails look and feel so much healthier than a normal varnish would leave them. My toes love it and I am super impressed. Brought out by a 26 year old girl who could obviously see a gap in the market for a great product, which has won a few beauty awards and also give back a percentage of the profits to charity. They sell it in Boots and Marks and Spencers and there is a pretty good colour range too – something for everyone and for each season and it is £14. I am definitely going to be buying an Autumnal shade to try and this one will make it onto my fingernails too!

Now I can be glam, but I also like cute and my daughters knew that I would love this compact when they brought it me from the US. So many blushers come in clumpy boxy containers and this lovely new range from Too Faced comes in a gorgeous sweetheart packaging design which opens up to include a cute heart mirror and a sweet rabbit design within the blush which makes it a fun addition in my make up bag as it is perfect for travelling as well. Don’t you find, that along with the lipstick the blusher is not far behind to fade, and this new one from Too Faced lasts all day once you have applied it.

too faced love flush

The colour I have it in is called Baby Love and is a lovely natural looking blush with a hint (and only a hint) of a gold shimmer in it, making it a perfect blush for the Autumn/Winter and one which would suit all skin tones. It’s really pigmented, so don’t be heavy handed when applying this otherwise you will get a bit of a shock and the blush is super soft to the touch, so really luxurious too. It’s the kind of blush that you would wear every day and it would give you a lovely glow and one which makes me smile every time I take it out of my make up bag.

How many times have I admired this little beauty as a gorgeous palette of finishing powders and finally I succumbed and purchased one a few weeks ago. Firstly, it still is the one of the loveliest beauty products that I own and every time I open it I can’t wait to use it. It’s expensive, yes, I know, but not only is the case beautiful and the product inside but I love the effect that it has on my complexion. Designed to give you that ‘glow from within’, that ‘basking in the glow of candlelight’ look and without any airbrushing, this palette contains 3 beautiful powders to try. A friend of mine mixes them all together and applies it all over her skin to give it that soft glow that we all love, but I play about with mine a little bit more, but it is entirely up to you as to what effect you like.

hourglass ambient

There are three powders within the palette – Dim, Incandescent and Radiant. Dim is a good match for my fair skin tone with just a hint of warmth, a soft beige which works on cool or warm tones and helps to blur any pores, Incandescent has a glow quality for areas that you want to highlight such as cheekbones, tops of eyebrows, bridge of nose etc, and Radiant is a golden beige that adds more warmth to a complexion and I either apply it with a flat foundation brush or a stippling highlighter brush. Finely milled and perfect for mature skin to give me that dewy glow of youth! I purchased mine from Space NK and have never looked back!

For someone that has pretty fine, limp hair – the struggle for volume and weightlessness within a product is quite hard to find so when I found Dove’s Oxygen Moisture Souffle Treatment for fine, flat hair, I thought this had my name on it so hey …. give it a go. Anything with the word ‘souffle’ in and I am hooked – a bit like I would choose a double cooked cheese souffle for a starter at meals. Yum. But hey, let’s get back to the hair… We all have so many issues with our hair that we are trying to deal with and what style we are trying to achieve and so it is usually for me a combination of products which are combined to help me to do this.

dove oygen moisture souffle

It comes in a shallow round tub and is indeed a light, mousse consistency and after shampooing I leave it for 5 minutes in my hair. (the smell is lovely). Although I am initially quite concerned that a product this light will have enough of a moisturising effect I am pleased to say that it does on me feel beautifully light and smooth and soft and with so much more volume than I would have using other shampoos and conditioners. I am thinking that this is a great summer treatment and probably one I will alternate with a richer one in the winter. There is a shampoo and conditioner within the range and I will certainly purchase those to try next time but in the meantime I definitely feel myself stroking my soft, fluffier hair more (that’s probably very annoying to lots of people!)

Hope you have enjoyed the products this week and lots of love.

Gill xx

Hello Lovelies

Hi to this week’s blog and the first part of my blog if you are a regular reader is usually a bit of a catch up on my week/life and this week has been a bit of a challenge in parts. Normally I don’t rant, and I will try not to here, but my daughter, Becky, got quite a lot of hate comments on her last video, mainly because of the lighting in the video and because she has a bit of a tan, but basically the worst offence in the world was that she hadn’t blended her foundation in sufficiently. Quite a few faceless haters came online to “Troll” her and several people that also follow and watch me, did come to her defence, but the effect of this on her was so sad to see, particularly as a Mum. I felt a bit helpless really and wasn’t sure whether to join in on the debate or just to keep out and leave it to others and try and comfort her privately. I don’t know whether they think that people like my daughter have particularly thick skins, which she certainly doesn’t have, or why they feel they have to facelessly say these awful things? There was a part of me that wanted to shout out at them, as all they are in bullies in a different form, and there was a part of me that wanted to give them a hug and show them some love as they clearly just feel such anger towards people like Becky.

The whole reason why Becky started and certainly why I do it is that none of us is perfect and few of us will ever be and everyone’s idea of beauty is slightly different but the whole point of blogging and YouTubing, surely is to come together as females and males of all ages and share ideas, support each other, help each other and show how if say you have a scar that you want to cover up then this cream might help or if your eyebrows aren’t great then maybe this crayon might help. You can put as much make up on the outside as you like but it isn’t necessarily going to sort out the inside. Beauty to me is a combination of both and beauty comes in so many different forms. It might be that someone makes you happy, or makes you laugh, or helps you relax from a stressful job, or shares a bad experience that they have been through and you feel like you are not alone in experiencing what you do. The time and thought that goes into content for which they are not paid in most instances is because they all have a passion for what they do and it should not be that these haters just go online and say awful things to people. That’s my little rant over…. but I have just had a bit of a tough time this week questioning everything and helping my daughter believe back in herself to carry on the most amazing job that she does of which I am so proud. How would you deal with these haters that come online …. at the moment I haven’t had one but I am sure that I will … what would your reaction be?? I would love to hear from you.

So anyway, now onto nice things …. which I certainly need after my week.

When my stepson is back from University, and spending more time with us, there is one thing that I have to remember to do…… swop the lovely Molton Brown handwash soap for some cheaper version! Several pumps of it several times a day and before I know it, my favourite hand wash has disappeared and I am left with the cheaper variety! He said to me that the Molton Brown one was the best hand wash ever! (Never underestimate a 21 year old male’s appreciation of hand wash.) I remember when Molton Brown first brought this beautiful fragrance out and I remember going back to my childhood when we used to grow rhubarb and thinking… they are never going to replicate that smell of fresh rhubarb …

molton brown soap

imagine my joy when I smelt it and realised they had! This combination of sweet with the fresh is just a joy as you smell it on your hands afterwards and also in the air, making it such a favourite of mine particularly for the summer. I love going into the Molton Brown shops for their practical yet beautiful layout with the little sinks in store so that you can try all the hand washes, to the gorgeous rows of brightly coloured products stacked up on the displays and always find it a very welcoming store with friendly staff. This luxurious soap with its cute little black bow on it brightens my room with its gorgeous pink colour and makes the boring job of washing your hands, just that little bit more exiting…. what would life be like without our amazing senses!

Do you suffer from drier lips but still like a lipstick powered with colour?? I wasn’t sure what to expect with a lipstick that included a primer, as I will be honest I had never tried a lip primer before. There are plenty of colours to choose from (loads of pinks, purples and nudes) and I ended up taking away Sweet Pop to try. Firstly the packaging which I love for its cuteness – square, and kinda chunky and contemporary and love the fact that the shade is true to the outside container which makes selecting your lipstick from a make up bag so much easier.

clinique pop and colour

The actual formula is lovely and smooth – it almost goes on like butter! and it gives a semi matte finish and kept my lips moisturised for most of the day. These come in at £16.00 each and I know they are more expensive than some of the cheaper buttery lipsticks as I call them, but there is something gorgeous about the container that I love and the product inside feels luxurious and is more long lasting than many other cheaper brands. Depends what your budget is.

We are not measuring the height of my sunflowers here …. we are measuring how much my short nails are growing. I have made a determined effort with my nails to strengthen them up these last few months and have suffered from many breaking due to my having gel nails for so many years. Enter one of the latest products from that cute brand Ciate which contains not just marula oil, but vitamins, aloe vera, ginseng and keratin nail treatment to actually boost the growth of your nails and make them stronger, which is definitely what I need. I laughed when I opened the box and saw this cute little measuring device on the side to measure the growth of your nails and thought I would never use that!!

ciate status grow

Guess who is now proudly measuring the growth particularly of my little nail which snapped off, against this cute measuring device on the bottle?? Yes Moi!! I apply it twice a week, good as gold, giving it two coats and have been using it for about 3 weeks now and have seen great improvement in both the strength and also the length of my nails. They will never be long talons (I live far too chaotic a life to have nails like that even though I love them on others!) but I want them to be a good length and strong so that they aren’t breaking every time I delve into my handbag to get my car keys out and I am making fantastic progress with the contents of this little bottle. My husband may be measuring how tall his tomatoes are getting … but for me … it’s all about my nails. Definitely works.

Whatever your age, spots, blemishes, call them what you like, we can suffer from them and I tend to due to fluctuating hormone levels. You think as you age that you will eventually have this amazing skin, and some of us are lucky to have that, but I have actually found mine to get slightly worse which is so annoying. Clinique’s Clearing Gel has something of a reputation on most Beauty Counters as being amazing at clearing blemishes and I have used it over the past years and tend to agree with the positive feedback from so many people. I tend to put it on at night mostly so that it can work its magic whilst I sleep and I find that any smaller blemishes have almost dried out by morning and certainly really reduced by the next day.

clinique anti blemish solutions

I have pretty sensitive skin and it tingles slightly when I put the clear gel on and then I feel a slight tightening of the skin, so I feel like its doing something, and it tends to dry them out quickly and then they literally just drop off haha … mine aren’t that big so no craters left behind. When you have a blemish you just want it gone asap don’t you, and so yes this might be slightly more expensive than some products but it really reduces the swelling, calms redness way better and quicker than a lot of other products and the bottle will probably last me about 6 months as you only need a little on the blemishes. So this little bottle comes everywhere with me when I travel too … one of my face’s essentials!!

Sorry about the rant earlier … but I love to hear your thoughts on it … so that I am ready haha when I get my first hater on YouTube or Twitter or wherever. I remember when I first started this and my girls said to me “Mum what will you do when you get your first hater?” I remember replying “I will just have a Gin and Tonic, lime and lots of ice ….. Sorted!”

Lots of Love

Hair, LIPSTICK, Skincare

Hello again lovelies,

Welcome to this week’s blog and another week in the life of ……. So to start of course, we had the lovely Mother’s Day, which I absolutely adore and I hope all you Mums out there were massively spoilt too on our special day. My girls arrived to cook my husband and I brunch which we thought was fantastic … so salmon and scrambled eggs and wonderful bacon etc were produced and devoured around our kitchen table. They arrived with a very large parcel (and the puppies of course to wish me Happy Mother’s Day) and my first thoughts were that it was an enormous picture – say a huge family photo of us all and I was beginning to wonder where I was going to put this enormous photo …. but when I opened the box, ha ha ….. it turned out to be a Queen of Mums Throne, which I needed to construct (supplied by the Body Shop to various Mums ) and then sit on and be treated like a Queen all day …. well, it did say constructed in 20 minutes, but if you have ever had the pleasure of building flat pack you will be well aware that it takes at least double that time, which indeed this did and it took 3 of us to work out how to assemble it. Anyway, it was a bit of fun, amongst the disagreement of which pieces went where and you can see the photo below … Needless to say I was treated like a Queen all day long.

Winter Skincare and Dealing with Back Pain

So welcome to my first ‘proper’ blog on a Friday morning and I am very excited to be writing this.  It has all become very real this week as Becky, Holly and I were asked to do a photoshoot for two magazines – Good Housekeeping and Cosmopolitan for their March editions and we couldn’t contain our excitement.  Travelling down on the train to London my thoughts came to how lovely and special it was to be working with my two lovely daughters on such an exciting project.  We arrived at the location house and were met by the super friendly team of two Claires from Good Housekeeping and a photographer and wardrobe girl plus hair and make up and the same for Cosmopolitan.  I was struck by how friendly everyone was and helpful trying to help us relax to get the shots they needed for their article.  The location house was amazing – just rented for the day and I was lucky enough to get the chance to talk to the owner who is a designer and had converted this house with her husband…
